I then divided Hoofddorp into zones and thus found myself at a different location every weekday evening to collect. People brought their surplus toys to my collection point of the evening, and from there the items were taken to storage at Eurobox Self Storage. According to her, this was the best approach. “I couldn’t see myself racing around Hoofddorp.”
The idea for her campaign came to Van Noordenne after she realised that the busy festive month of December was approaching. “As a single mother I know how difficult it is to buy presents for my children every year, but I reminded myself that there are families who have it even harder than I do,” the initiator explains. She’s referring to families who, for example, are in debt restructuring or whose parents have lost their jobs.
Van Noordenne received lovely responses during the collection. “Children who came to hand in their old toy cars said they’d go home and look for more toys,” she says. What else struck her? “Even members of poor families came to drop off toys.” The collection went so well that Van Noordenne didn’t even get around to clearing out her own attic. “Because it’s still completely full.”
Toys for about a hundred families—where do you put all that? “Fortunately, Eurobox Self Storage Hoofddorp on the Graan voor Visch industrial estate gave me a unit free of charge where I can temporarily store everything. The space is currently so full there’s really no room for more. I now have to start sorting.” Eurobox Self Storage later provided an additional storage unit free of charge.
The ‘Sinterklaasactie 2014’ got off to a good start but it’s not over yet. In fact, the most important thing still needs to be arranged. “The venue for the party. We don’t have that yet,” says Van Noordenne. “That’s where all our focus is now. I hope I can secure a free hall for it.”
Van Noordenne notes that only poor families with children are allowed to attend the party. “I’ll be promoting it in the Facebook group ‘Met de gesloten knip’, which many low-income residents of Hoofddorp have joined.”
